2016 Egg Hunt

The Miracle League Park is a regional complex with the world’s largest rubberized ball field for children and adults with physical disabilities. The facility also has a playground with 28 different pieces of equipment, each one being handicap accessible. The purpose of this park is to remove those barriers that keep children and adults with disabilities from experiencing the opportunity and sheer joy of playing the childhood games we all have enjoyed over our lifetimes. The field is capable of being used for baseball, soccer, basketball and flag football, with other sports to be added later, as needed. The Miracle League currently hosts Spring and Fall leagues for both children and adults.

In 2015, the Jonesboro Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #8 partnered with the Miracle League Park in Jonesboro to host a unique Easter Egg Hunt for children with disabilities. Some children often cannot participate in many of the other Egg Hunts offered around town due to physical limitations or the event not being handicap accessible. Each year, with the assistance of our membership and sponsors, the Fraternal Order of Police collects Easter Prize Baskets, candy and about 2,000 plastic eggs. This process begins a few weeks prior to the actual event. We then stuff all of the eggs with candy and or prize slips a few days prior to the event. On the day of the big hunt, members and volunteers spread the eggs across the field. After a short countdown, the children swarm the field on a mission to collect all the eggs. Sometimes Officers are partnered with children who may need assistance in collecting eggs and placing them in their baskets.

In 2017 we had roughly 40 children with disabilities participate in the event. Each child was able to get candy and an Easter Basket or prize of their choice. We provided pizza, drinks and cookies for all in attendance after the egg hunt was completed. We also had a station set up for the children to dye hard boiled eggs. A Jonesboro Police Department K-9 was on hand and gave the children a demonstration.

To our knowledge, we are the only FOP Lodge in the State of Arkansas who is partnering with the Miracle League in holding an Easter Egg Hunt for children with special needs. The response that we have received from the Miracle League and the parents of the children who have participated has been both amazing and heartwarming. This has proved to be an awesome event over the years for everyone involved.
